REBEKAH JONES

Rebekah Jones is a scientist focused on the intersection of people and the environment, and has focused her academic and professional careers on disaster research and communications.

The bulk of her research and practice is centered around hurricanes and climate change, using geospatial science as a tool to study how storms and changing environmental systems impact the Earth’s surface. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, won multiple awards from academic organizations, and have been featured in several technical and academic articles for her development of spatial data tools and applications.

She also served as a climate and hurricanes subject matter expert for the 2014 Louisiana Hazards Mitigation Plan, contributed content to the 2014 National Climate Assessment, and worked with Native American tribes in south Louisiana on climate change and hurricane research, adaptation planning and action.

She was launched into stardom in May 2020 after she was fired from her position managing the team that created Florida's ArcGIS COVID-19 dashboard, for refusing to manipulate data about the state of Florida's plan to prematurely reopen during COVID-19. Josh Fox is currently producing a film about her story titled Rebekah Jones: Whistleblower.
